Gomawild in Pondoro Game lodge

Aug 1, 2025

During a trip to South Africa, the Gomawild team had the opportunity to discover the Pondoro Game Lodge Safari in Balue Nature Reserve, next to Olifants River.

We were welcomed by the reserve to find out more about their project and their relationship with the animals, and to help them raise their profile and spread the word about their passion for animal.

Animal Conservation work

Pondoro has designated two camps for conservation, research, and anti-poaching efforts.

  • The Nonwane hilltop camp hosts York game guards, offering a strategic vantage point to deter poachers.
  • The main Nonwane camp is used by Transfrontier Africa, accommodating key personnel from the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Unit and the Bush Babies Environmental Program, as well as researchers and professors conducting studies.

Safari award winning reserve

In addition to their strong commitment to conservation, anti-poaching efforts, and education programs supported by Pondoro, Robert’s safari — founded by him with passion — offers a wonderful place to unwind, reconnect with nature, and witness South Africa’s iconic wildlife: lions, leopards, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, rhinos, and more.

Pondoro Game Lodge is an award-winning safari that has received numerous accolades over the years, a testament to its high standards and outstanding hospitality. Their dedicated team gives you the chance to observe animals up close in their natural habitat during unforgettable game drives, and to learn more about local wildlife and ecosystems thanks to their highly experienced guides — most of whom have over 10 years of experience in the bush, and often 20 years or more.

Our Week at Pondoro: An Unforgettable Experience

Our week at Pondoro was truly unforgettable — seven days in the heart of the bush where we learned so much about the animals.

From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the staff, who took care of our luggage and led us to our lodge. As we got there around noon, we were lucky enough to head out on our very first game drive that same afternoon.

That’s when the real adventure began: every morning and evening for a week, we observed countless animals in their natural habitat — a truly magical experience. In addition to the game drives, the bush walks offered before lunch gave us the chance to get up close to hippos, hyenas, and baboons. Our guide generously shared his in-depth knowledge of the local wildlife and flora — how each species feeds, moves around, and coexists with others. We also learned how to identify animal tracks and detect signs of their recent presence.

Beyond the wildlife experience, every detail at Pondoro is carefully thought out: the cuisine is exceptional, featuring refined meals paired with excellent wines. The lodges, nestled along the river, offer stunning views of elephants, hippos, and even the occasional lion coming to drink — all while respecting the animals’ space.

A stay that combines adventure, comfort, and wonder.
